Geotechnical Services for Willow Street Corridor Project (2021-2022)
The project included improvements to East Willow Street in the City of Signal Hill. These improvements are part of the Interstate 710 (I-710) Corridor Improvement Project Early Action Program. The goal of the project was to provide congestion relief on East Willow St. during peak
hours by improving the intersections at Cherry Avenue. The potential improvements for this build alternative included the following:
- Addition of eastbound and westbound right-turn lanes and a second northbound left-turn lane at East Willow St and Cherry Ave.
- Installation of protected eastbound and westbound left-turn phases at East Willow St.
- Reduction of the median, curb widths, sidewalks, and/or re-alignments to incorporate the eastbound, westbound, and northbound turn-lanes.
- Signal replacement and timing/operations improvements, including signal interconnection and synchronization, with leading pedestrian intervals at high-pedestrian activity intersections.
- Striping and signage improvements.
- Green Streets, stormwater, and pavement improvements as required.
GAI performed a pavement engineering investigation for this project. Our services consisted of performing a site reconnaissance, conducting cores, collecting samples and performing laboratory testing on the samples, performing engineering analysis, and preparing a final geotechnical pavement engineering report that included our findings and recommendations for the design and construction of the proposed pavement from a geotechnical point of view.
