Geotechnical Investigation for the Underground StormTrap Detention Facility (2016)
The Underground StormTrap Detention Facility has an approximate footprint of about 55,000 square feet. When the facility was under construction in late 2015, unfiltered stormwater entered the facility, and this intrusion caused fine particle sedimentation.
Concerns were raised by LAWA about the infiltration capacity of the facility. The contractor, Griffith/Coffman, hired GAI to provide a geotechnical investigation of the existing percolation rate at the west aircraft maintenance area of the facility. The tests were performed underground in a confined area with limited access. GAI implemented a unique approach to fit the job specifics. Our crew performed three double-ring type tests within the footprint of the facility.
