Geotechnical and Geohazard Investigation of Treatment Facilities for the San Fernando Groundwater Basin Remediation, a Progressive Design-Build Project (2019-2022)
LADWP selected Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. to provide progressive Design-Build services for the San Fernando Groundwater Basin (SFB) Remediation Project. The project included the design and construction of treatment facilities and other improvements at two plant sites and two pipeline connections. The plant sites were 1) the North Hollywood Central site and 2) the Tujunga site.
Each treatment facility consisted of an Ultraviolet/Advanced Oxidation Process (UV AOP) building; standalone facilities supporting multiple Granular Activated Carbon tanks, chemical tanks, backwash waste tanks, and water pumps; below-grade vaults and below-grade pipeline system; and two new pipelines (6,600 linear feet) for the remediation wells. The pipeline installation consisted of open-cut excavations and 1,000 linear feet of micro-tunneling.
GAI performed comprehensive geotechnical and geohazard investigation services, including field exploratory program, laboratory testing, office engineering, and preparation of final reports, including the study methodology, field logs, laboratory analyses, and our recommendations for the design and construction of the proposed developments from a geotechnical standpoint. In addition, we worked closely with the design team (Stantec) and the design-build contractor (Kiewit), providing geotechnical data and recommendations throughout each stage of this complex design-build project. GAI provided geotechnical support services for the project’s construction phase, which started in late 2019 and was completed in 2022.
